The opening ceremony of the conference, held in the Loya Jirga Hall, was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Honorable Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, Acting Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Mawlavi Mohammad Younus Akhundzada, Acting Minister of Higher Education, Honorable Sheikh ul Hadith Mawlavi Nida Mohammad Nadeem, along with deputy ministers from the Ministries of Higher Education, Water and Energy, Foreign Affairs, and Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock. The conference also brought together leaders and lecturers from both Emirate and private educational institutions, foreign lecturers and experts, as well as representatives of organizations involved in water affairs. 

At the opening of the “International Water Conference”, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Honorable Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, considered the conference as an important step toward better water management in the country. He also expressed his hope that similar conferences would be organized in other universities as well.

The Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs stated that water is dwindling and have impacted global political and economic relations negatively. He emphasized that Afghanistan needs significant efforts in research and praised the Ministry of Higher Education for its initiatives in this field. 

Additionally, the Acting Minister of Higher Education, Honorable Sheikh ul Hadith Mawlavi Nida Mohammad Nadeem, said that the Ministry of Higher Education has organized national and international conferences on major and vital issues of the country and affirmed that this initiative will continue. 

He further added that Allah Almighty has emphasized the value and proper utilization of water, stating that water is mentioned in 63 verses of the Holy Quran. 

Also, he urged lecturers and experts to conduct research on effective water management, develop strategies, and present them to sectoral institutions for implementation.

The Acting Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Mawlavi Mohammad Younus Akhundzada, asserted that this conference has been organized for a highly significant purpose and emphasized that water management is one of the fundamental objectives of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. 

Additionally, the Director of the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Mullah Abdul Wasi, read a message from Honorable Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund. The message emphasized that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan considers water management a crucial necessity of the time and remains committed to its effective governance. It called on lecturers and experts to present scientific solutions for challenges related to climate change, drought, and floods through the “International Water Conference” and to share these recommendations with relevant institutions.

Messages from the Acting Minister of Water and Energy, the Acting Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock, and the Academy of Sciences were also read. These messages highlighted the importance of water for sustainable agriculture in the country and accentuated the need for academic research in this field.

The Deputy Minister of Water at the Ministry of Water and Energy, Mujeeb Rahman Omar Akhundzada, said that since the arrival of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, significant efforts and attention have been given to water management. He also called upon regional and global countries not to politicize water, emphasizing that it is a humanitarian issue that ensures the survival of life.

The Administrative Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohammad Naeem, highlighted the significance of water by referring to verses from the Holy Quran and emphasized its proper utilization. He further emphasized the need to raise public awareness to prevent water wastage.

“Afghanistan has been affected by the issue of climate change, and if its water is not managed properly, its future generations will face the challenge of drought,” said The Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock, Mawlavi Sadra Azam.

In addition to the national lecturers, lecturers and experts from Russia, Iran, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, Nepal, the Philippines, and Turkey have participated in the “International Water Conference” at Kabul Polytechnic University.
